Johnson Farm Cemetery

"Oaks Cemetery"

According to Theta Hakes Brown, the Johnson Farm Cemetery sits on Lot 4 in the town of Yates, owned by Mrs. J. E. Johnson of R.F.D. 3, Lyndonville (c.1933).

Contemporary sources state that the cemetery is located off Goodwin Road in the town of Yates but like Brown's record, does not specify an exact location. In her inventory, she records five headstones in the cemetery:

George T. Covert, d. June 24, 1825 ae 2yr 5mo
William Foster, son of James and Williana, d. Apr. 25, 1842 ae 10yr
James H. Pettit, son of Solomon and Electa, d. Nov. 7, 1854 ae 15yr
Samuel Thomas, d. July 29, 1832 ae 48yr
Jane Thomas, wife of Samuel, d. Aug. 17, 1841 ae 67yr

A map of Orleans County published in 1860 shows a graveyard (abbreviated GrY) on the east side of what is now Ward Road, just north of Platten Road. This graveyard is situated on Lot 4 in Yates, but more precisely identified as Range 3, Township 16, Section 1, Lot 4. County deed records show that the parcel(s) were transferred to James E. Johnson from George Bane in the 1890s. Two parcels, totaling approx. 79.5 acres can be traced back further, with 37 acres transferring to Bane from Cyrus J. Blood in 1866 and 38 acres transferring to Bane from Daniel Stockwell in 1864. Stockwell purchased the full acreage of Lots 3 and 4 in Section 1, Township 16, Range 3 in 1836 from the Holland Land Company, which presumably contained the bodies of Covert and Samuel Thomas, both buried before Stockwell made the purchase.
